Involvement with Art
The Blue Whole Gallery will feature two artists whose interests differ as well as their focus on art. Mary Franchini a two dimensional artist and teacher will present self-portraits and other works that were started some time ago and are now finally finished. While Barbara Anne Neswald brings her gift of realism in portraying plants and animals, revealing their beauty and simplicity. Both of these member artists will be featured in the windows of the Gallery and will share their creativity with the community on First Friday April 7th from 5 to 8pm & throughout the month.

Mary Franchini is an experimental mixed media artist using water based paints most of the time and adding paper, fabric and found objects when her work calls for them. Her images can be somewhat realistic, impressionistic, abstract or non-representational. The results can be a mix of different mediums from acrylics, gesso, watercolor to even collage and at times its the work that may dictate where it wants to go. She is an artist who enjoys the freedom that creativity offers. Examples of this exploration follow:

Mary revels in a "carefree abandon way" so that her artwork shows movement along with texture and colors. She likes bright colors and uses acrylics because of their versatility as well as white and black gesso for mixing. She also experiments with paper in making collages because they lend themselves to layering.

Mary Franchini and the Blue Whole Gallery invite the public to explore her efforts of being free to express herself in the imaginative works she has created. Meet her on First Friday April 7th, from 5 to 8pm. and enjoy her display throughout the month.
Barbara Anne Neswald, who has recently arrived to the Olympic Peninsula from Philadelphia, brings her gifts of realism in portraying plant and animals. For years her commitment to the Philadelphia Society of Botanical illustration gave her the impetus to depict the distinctive elements found in nature and to render them for others to appreciate and enjoy. The beauty and simplicity of Nature can be seen in her artwork below.

Using the unique layering of color by Prismacolor pencils, Barbara found ways to depict the busy hum of bees in the vines of a honeysuckle plant in summer. She felt a timelessness as she drew and painted objects of Nature, opening a world of exploration involving shapes, colors and diversity. Samples of her efforts are seen below.

Barbara Anne Neswald's artwork is realistic because she is awed by reality. Each picture is treated as a portrait of a distinct plant or animal, revealing the color subtleties and flowing geometry of nature.
