Visually Inspired Art

Evening View of the Blue Whole Gallery

Artistic Expressions Influenced by Nature

Two of the Blue Whole Gallery member artists, Katherine Loveland and Jan Tatom,  will be the featured artists during the month of November.  Both of these artist's work are influenced and inspired by nature.  Katherine Loveland is a photographer who is fascinated as well as focused on revealing unusual patterns or shapes that she sees in unexpected views and visions revealed by nature.   While Jan Tatom is a fiber artist inspired by the colors & textures revealed to her during the months of spring, summer & fall on the Olympic Peninsula.  What a fantastic combination when two artists in separate art fields are influenced by our natural surroundings. See their inspirations by visiting the Blue Whole Gallery on First Friday, November 6 from 5 to 8 pm. & meet the artists. View their work throughout the month.

 Katherine Loveland

Katherine has an innate view and perspective in seeing patterns and shapes in nature that she captures with her photographic skills. These views are revealed in the following triptychs that successfully allows viewers to see those unique views that would normally escape our senses.

"Flow"
"Confluence"

What a wonderful world that Katherine Loveland has opened to us by selecting  simple objects and forms from nature. This gives her an opportunity to show us perspectives in seeing patterns and forms in a new light that is unexpected but as well as moving and inspirational.  Look at the following examples of her work & appreciate what she is revealing to you.

"Rhapsody in Rust"

"What Lies Within"

"Weathering"

To provide for a more complex experience Katherine chooses to show her photography as triptychs so that the viewer can see the similarities in patterns and shapes formed by everyday objects. These comparisons are also tactile forms of sculpture as seen in the selections below.

"Waves of Wood"

"Antiquities"

"Sand & Ice"

Everyday objects as well as natural surfaces can be seen anew when they are grouped to show patterns, shapes and colors.  Katherine Loveland takes us there to see the unexpected involvement and appreciation of visual beauty within Nature's Realm. Enjoy this exploration and involvement by visiting the Blue Whole Gallery and share in Katherine Loveland's artwork and meet her on First Friday, November 6th from 5 to 8 pm. at the Gallery

Jan Tatom

Colors and textures dominate the creative fiber work that Jan Tatom forms with the aid of two looms and her skills in weaving.  Her output spans a variable collection of fabric garments from handbags, felting, knitted and crocheted accessories, to hand-spun fibers, scarves and hand-woven pieces.  The following is a sample of her art work.

It's a Wrap

Seahawks Glimmer

Inspired by what nature offers, Jan Tatom weaves elements such as color, texture, and geometric patterns into her fiber art by using threads with color combinations provided by dye processes and loom designs.  Her goal is to form items that serve multiple uses from wearable art to decorative additions within the home.  Each creation can also be a learning event that can transport the weaver into another area of creativity in relation to patterns or color.  The Bamboo & Ginkgo scarf below is an example of discharge and over dye.

Double Weave Block Pattern

In order to create these woven objects Jan uses both purchased & hand-spun fibers, a swift, a device that winds yarn into skeins, along with two looms, a Schacht & a Gilmore, which are often warped simultaneously with unrelated fibers and projects.  The weave structures can be simple or complex allowing unlimited freedom of expression.
The weaver's world is an ancient art form where woven items helped establish cultural identity, historical events, fashion trends and artistic skills.  The challenge is to interpret such inspirations into creations that are exciting, practical and useful as decorative and utilitarian pieces.

Squared Away

The fiber art work of Jan Tatom gives her the opportunity to express her inspirations and passion for weaving.  Explore this weaver's world where distinctive loom designs, color range and textures are incorporated into every hand-woven piece. Meet the artist, Jan Tatom, by visiting the Blue Whole Gallery on First Friday, November 6th, from 5 to 8 pm. and view her fiber art at the Gallery throughout the month.

Both artists, Katherine Loveland and Jan Tatom will be present at the Blue Whole Gallery on First Friday November 6th from 5 to 8pm.  Come and share in their artistic creations inspired by nature and their passionate efforts in revealing it.
